Gauteng schools take top honours in the June round of the JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge

Two Gauteng schools showed outstanding skill as the June winners of the JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge when they took top standing in the Equity Portfolio and Speculator Portfolio, respectively. Eden College Lyndhurst and Parktown Boys High School were joined by Free State representative, Jimmy Roos School, who won in the Income Portfolio.

Eden College’s “BADJ is Back Again” team is proving to be quite the challenger in this year’s edition of the literacy competition, with this being their second win in the Equity Portfolio. A growth of 13.71% on their capital put them in top spot this time around. They are led by teacher, Elsa Olivier who was thrilled with her team’s achievement. “Another notch on our belt makes us a serious contender for the overall prize. I’m extremely proud of my team,” she said ,Although this is a first time win for team “Jozi Share”, Parktown Boys High School has been represented as winners in the Speculator Portfolio before. Led by Ashika Duttoo, the players delivered a growth of 14.68% on their capital.

According to Duttoo, “I am impressed with the talent shown by the team. They are learning more and growing in confidence every day, and this result is proof of that. I’m sure they will only get better in the remaining months of the Investment Challenge.”

First time winners, “JR Investors” of Jimmy Roos School in the Free State, grew their income to a whopping R12 291.27 in the Income Portfolio – the highest amount to be achieved so far in the competition. Their teacher and mentor, Marelize du Toit said, “To be in first place for the first time and with such a magnificent result is a great feat for the team. The time and effort the learners have been putting in for something that is outside the school curriculum is commendable. This can only be a sign of better things to come.”

The learners in each team have been awarded R500 each for best performance in their individual portfolios. A further R500 has been awarded to their mentoring teachers and also to their schools.

The Investment Challenge runs until September and is open to all learners from any South African high school. Students from universities and independent colleges are also eligible to participate. Entrants have a choice of selecting one or more risk portfolios that they wish to take part in for the competition namely: Income (low risk), Equity Growth (moderate risk) and Speculator (high risk). All school entrants must be in teams of four and have to be supervised by a teacher or mentor. University teams must consist of a minimum of two members and a maximum of four.

At the end of the competition, five prizes amounting to R60 000 per portfolio will be awarded to the overall winners of the Income, Equity Growth and Speculator Portfolios; and for the Universities and Colleges, a top prize of an all expenses paid overseas trip plus R25, 000 is up for grabs.
