Clients benefit from Anchor Industries’ office expansion in Johannesburg
The expansion of the Anchor Industries premises in Johannesburg, costing an estimated R2.3 million over the next two and a half years is now complete. It brings with it an additional 1540m2 of warehousing space, increasing the capacity to 4500m2. Potentially the additional space will allow for a larger stock holding of the existing products, which includes steel wire rope, mild steel chain, lifting chain and components, a range of hardware, hoists as well as webbing and wire rope slings.
The expansion necessitated the employment of three additional staff members resulting in faster and more efficient service and product delivery, especially when larger quantities of stock are required. “It has been a great selling point for us," discusses Nick Raubenheimer, Anchor Industries Johannesburg Branch Manager. However, while attracting new and potential clients is important, Raubenheimer explains that the expanded facility is a great benefit to streamline current activities. "It has been a good change as we have been able to accommodate clients with shortened product delivery periods. The Johannesburg operation will remain committed to offering superior quality products and services that clients expect at reasonable prices.”
“The expansion is the latest demonstration of the company's commitment to continue delivering solutions to clients and forms part of our strategy to grow the company," says Dale Hutcheson, Anchor Industries Managing Director. Through ongoing client and market research, Anchor Industries identified a need to increase stock holding. “The opening of the extended warehouse in April is the beginning of a line of projects to be carried out with the aim of continually enhancing the proficiency of the company in order to benefit our clients and to make the industry a safer working environment for all,” Hutcheson concludes.
Anchor Industries operates under the ISO 9001 system whereby all products and services meet and exceed the SANS and EN standards and specifications. Strict internal procedures enable greater control over these commodities which are backed up by proper certification, testing and full traceability as a standard procedure. With great confidence in the brand, which is synonymous with safety and quality, client feedback attests that the company lives up to those high standards. A recent audit was completed by DNV and the results confirm that the products and services adhere to these industry standards.
Investments and developments such as these make Anchor Industries the leading supplier of products and services to the lifting, rigging, marine and offshore mooring industries with a growing footprint in Africa.

Newly established Anchor Testing & Rigging Services
The recently established company Anchor Testing & Rigging Services has successfully completed a 440t testing project in Cape Town harbour using stud link chain. The company that provides testing and rigging services to industrial, marine and offshore clients is a subsidiary of Anchor Industries, the leading supplier of lifting and rigging as well as marine and offshore mooring equipment and services in Southern Africa.
The project, coordinated for SBM Offshore was carried out onboard the Normand Installer where 3660m of chain was used as weight to test the stern gantry’s required proof load capacity of 440t. With both companies working together to coordinate the supply, loading, transport, and assembling of the test, the successful completion of a complicated project was achieved on time and without any incident, thus increasing the capacity of the Group.
The project was coordinated as the chain was bundled and laced together using SWR and shackles to create the required weight which was pre-calculated by Anchor Industries and verified by the mobile cranes rated capacity indicator (RCI) as it was laid out on the platform.
A platform was built to hold the chain which was suspended from a 500T load cell shackle. The shackle’s reading was verified against the ship’s load cell which is integrated into the gantry to measure the weight of the chain when lifted.
“The greatest challenge experienced while completing this project was to coordinate the test within the time indicated and to build a platform to fit precisely into the gantry, as well as on the exact position on the quay side as the vessel was not available to measure the space. This platform was successfully erected based on estimations and fitted precisely into position,” explains Johan Kruger, Anchor Testing & Rigging Services Managing Director.
The entire project was completed by a team that comprised of a Lifting Machinery Inspector (LMI), six riggers, three low bed truck drivers with riggers assistants, two crane operators running double shifts, a chief engineer and captain of the vessel, as well as vessel riggers to assist with rigging the load cell. With continued emphasis on quality and safety, comprehensive training of all staff ensured that the highest level of service is maintained at all times. Additionally the LMI is registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the riggers have offshore experience and formal rigger training.

Anchor Industries creates the first electronic Lifting Guide for the industry
Anchor Industries, leading supplier of products and services to the lifting and rigging industry in Southern Africa introduces the first electronic lifting guide for this market. The Apex80 Lifting Guide was created in an effort to increase efficiency within the lifting and rigging industry and to provide users and distributors with information to safely perform lifting operations.
About the Apex80 Lifting Guide
The guide consists of several easy referenced chapters including, Anchor Industries’ Lifting & Rigging catalogue, product manuals, South African Legislation and standards, a glossary of terms and the most common errors made when inspecting equipment. Additionally there are two interchangeable chapters, that is, a set of sling costing sheets and certificates in the Client version, and a 100-page fully customisable inspection register for lifting tackle in the End User version.
General information includes various aspects of lifting and rigging operations, standards, legislation, work load limits (WLL), sling angles and among others, calculating sling leg lengths.
The certificate layouts comply with the South African National Standards (SANS) and provide users with a standard, easy-to-read layout and in-depth information on the equipment.
The interactive chain and SWR sling costing spreadsheet in the Client version is designed to ensure that the correct sling is supplied for the specific application and all components have been included in the costing. It also provides a bill of materials and instructions for the relevant staff assembling the slings.
The inspection register included with the End User version is fully customisable and enables the capturing of all lifting tackle as required by the Occupational Health & Safety Act. The index page details information about the location, certificate number, next inspection date and status of the product. As opposed to a printed guide, the electronic format enables the End User to swiftly view the available equipment and scheduled inspection dates.
Great interest has been generated in Johannesburg after Dale Hutcheson, Anchor Industries Managing Director, conducted the first demonstrations to their clients. These clients have expressed the benefits they foresee this guide to have for their businesses, as well as for the End User. “The guide is available to our clients at no charge. They are able to use the equipment register, various information pages and certificate layouts in the execution of their services,” says Hutcheson. With the positive response received in Johannesburg, workshops and demonstrations have been scheduled to take place at the Cape Town and Durban branches.
The motivation to compile the lifting guide was initially as a result of the demand by Anchor Industries’ sales staff. However, the intention now is to present the industry with easy-to-access information that will ensure that the correct product is used according to the requirements of the job. “We are striving to educate users on safety aspects when operating lifting equipment in order to create greater product and safety awareness,” continues Hutcheson. “This guide along with our WLL and inspection posters, comprehensive certification, product marking and availability, is designed as a complete Apex80 system on how to manage your rigging department.”
In keeping with the easy use and interactive nature of the guide, various pages are available for download in the client login section of the Anchor Industries website. Visit www.anchors.co.za
The Apex80 Lifting Guide is available from all Anchor Industries branches. Upon request, a sales representative will demonstrate the system to the client. Anchor Industries introduces new Vertex Webbing Slings to the market
Anchor Industries recently introduced Vertex webbing slings and tie downs to the market, as part of their range of lifting and rigging products. With offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, they are major supplier of lifting and rigging as well as marine and offshore mooring equipment and services in Southern Africa.
"Through the use of new and innovative products we are improving our service offering to clients, while adhering to the highest industry standards of safety. This raises the bar in the industry. With this in mind, all Vertex webbing slings are supplied with the correct markings, certification and safety and maintenance instructions," says Dale Hutcheson, Anchor Industries Managing Director.
Made from high tenacity multifilament polyester textile, the slings are used in general day-to-day lifting applications. Colour coded according to the work load limit (WLL), the duplex flat and endless round slings are stocked in various lengths with the capacity ranging from 1T to 8T. With a 7:1 factor of safety, the slings were tested and adhere to the SANS1492-1&2 specifications. Subsequent testing is being coordinated at the CSIR.
The benefits of using webbing slings are that they are softer than steel wire rope and chain slings, thereby protecting the load from damage such as cuts, scratches and friction caused by other lifting slings.
Vertex products are available at all Anchor Industries branches or through their distributors.
Contact the head office in Cape Town on 021 – 531 0525 with regards to the Vertex slings or any other industry related query. Also visit www.anchors.co.za for a full range of products and services.
